SNC-Lavalin Inc. and its project management division, Pacific Liaicon and Associates Inc., has just recently completed 10 successful years of fundraising, mainly for the Eureka Camp Society, formerly the Advantage Society for Children with Learning Disabilities and Apex Secondary School, an alternate school for troubled teens.  Each year SNC-Lavalin/Pacific Liaicon hosts a charity golf tournament and auction, organized by Henry Wakabayashi, founder of Pacific Liaicon.

The event was inspired by Henry’s daughter, Beth, who early in her career volunteered her time to the Eureka Camp Society, and was actively involved in setting up and working for two years at Apex Secondary School.  One day Beth said to her dad, “Dad, we are so truly blessed, we should share our good fortune with people less fortunate than us.”  Beth carried on her work with youth in Ontario and Alberta, and is currently a counselor for the Alberta Drug and Alcohol Commission.

The charity golf tournament that Beth inspired has raised over $400,000 over the last 10 years.

The 10th annual Charity Golf Tournament and Auction was held on May 28, 2008 at the Westwood Plateau Golf and Country Club in Coquitlam, British Columbia.  Essential to the success of this event and all previous years, has been the participation of Maynards Industries’ auctioneers, Barry Scott and Robert Seibold, and master of ceremonies, Phil Reimer.  Clients, business associates, contractors and suppliers made generous donations of cash and auction items, and provided hole and power cart sponsorships.  With 150 participants and volunteers, this year’s event raised over $50,000 for the Eureka Camp Society, Apex Secondary School and other charities.

Other charities, which have received funds in the past include:

Dr. Peter Centre / Dr. Peter Aids Foundation

ENVIROS Wilderness School

Civil Engineering Scholarships at the University of British Columbia

Rudy Kovach Memorial Scholarship at the Emily Carr Art Institute

“SNC-Lavalin is one of the world’s leading groups of engineering and construction companies, a key player in facilities and operations management, and in the ownership, operation and maintenance of infrastructure” (www.snc-lavalin.com).

The Eureka Camp Society (www.eurekacamp.ca) offers outdoor recreational programs for children and adolescents with invisible disabilities.  Apex Secondary School (www.sd35.bc.ca/apex/) uses a therapeutic education model “to re-engage students in their education, family and community.”
